Dental Exam

At a Glance

Dental Exams are a critical part of understanding a patients overall oral health.  In addition to a visual exam of the teeth and gums, sophisticated digital x-ray images are taken of the mouth to determine if there is decay not seen by the naked eye.  In addition to assessing the overall health of the teeth and gums, the exam also looks for telltale signs of other larger problems such as oral cancer or “impacted teeth” (teeth that are “stuck”, and aren’t able to come in or “erupt” correctly).

Why consider this procedure

As with many areas of life, the sooner an oral health problem is found, the easier it is to treat and less painful to fix.  Therefore, dental exams are a key component in ensuring your mouth is healthy and strong to last a lifetime!

What to anticipate during the procedure

The goal of the Dental examination is to determine the health of the jaw, teeth, and soft tissue (gums).  If a patient hasn’t had recent x-rays, pictures will be taken of the inside of the jaw to see areas where problems might occur.  After x-rays are taken, the Dentist will perform a tooth by tooth exam to look for decay (cavities), and to assess the health of the gums.  The Dentist will then determine what, if any, treatment options will be required to ensure the patient continues with excellent oral health.

What to anticipate after the procedure

It is recommended that patients have exams a minimum of once a year, and cleanings every 6 months.
